Painting the interior of your new home is essential in giving it a professional look. You can involve an expert or do it on your own. But the process is not as simple as it may seem, and the former option is exceedingly rewarding.  New construction requires additional input if your target is a 5-star rated interior. The walls and ceiling must be prepared appropriately, and the right tools and techniques applied.

Painting the walls

The main work in painting the interior of new construction is on the walls, and for the best results, the following is key;

Dust Removal

Typically, newly constructed walls have a layer of sanding dust. For a smooth paint finish, this dust must be removed. The method of clearance depends on the thickness of the dust layer. For mildly dusty areas, you can use a microfiber cloth wrapped around a pole sander. Regularly shaking the fabric to remove excess dust helps produce cleaner surfaces. If the dust layer is quite thick, use a shop vacuum. You can speed up the process by fitting the shop vacuum with a dust collection bag or particulate air filter.

For the paint to adhere to the surfaces avidly, priming is fundamental for a new construction interior. Repainting old walls may be different, though. Using any primer can be quite disappointing in the future; therefore, consider only reputable types. Most professionals prefer polyvinyl acetate primer. It works stunningly on drywalls saturating and sealing all small surface cracks. Ideally, the primer should match your wall colour if well tinted.

The application of the primer requires a roller with an even roller cover surface.  Ensure there are no loose fibers in the cover by wrapping a layer of masking tape around it. Otherwise, they might be trapped in the primer and produce elevations, thereby ruining the finish. A shop vacuum is also efficient in removing the fibers. The recommended size of the roller cover is 0.75 inches.

Paint Selection

Apart from the expertise of the painter, the type of paint you choose has a significant contribution to the outcome. If some work that may leave scratches on the wall needs to be done in a particular room after painting, a flat finish paint is the best option. This is because performing touch up is more straightforward compared to the other types. If you have a limited budget, a tinted primer, and a single coat of flat paint can give an exceptional finish. But, generally, two coats is the recommended minimum. If there are slight bulges on the primer, the first layer may not produce some streaks and uneven appearance. But with the second layer, wall smoothness is guaranteed.

When the painting is the final work being done in a new room, then consider either eggshell or satin finish. Usually, low-lustre paints are more abrasion-resistant and, therefore, more comfortable to wash compared to the flat ones.

Choosing the right tools

Using the appropriate tools is as critical as choosing the right type of paint. For large wall sections, rollers would be more suitable. Only remember to remove loose fibers from the cover as you did during priming. While both the large and small-sized rollers can be used, the smaller ones, for example, the 9-inch roller, are easier to work with due to their featherweight. If you have high walls or ceiling, consider fitting your roller with an adjustable pole.

Some areas, such as the seam between the ceiling and the wall, cannot be painted using a roller. Thus, consider acquiring brushes of different sizes to help maneuver around such sections. Natural-bristle brushes work perfectly with all types of paints, while synthetic ones produce better results with non-oil based paints. For working along edges, you need brushes with tapered bristles.

Working cautiously

Pay as much attention to vast areas where you use rollers as you would to the smaller places where you use a brush. Both the brush and the roller require loading with the right amount of paint to prevent forming defects, such as blobs on the wall.  For loading rollers, a medium-sized bucket fitted roller grid performs better than a roller pan. When fully submerged into the paint and rolled over the grid, the adequate amount is absorbed by the fibers and removes the excess.

When using a brush, entirely dip the bristles into the paint and slightly tap it against the bucket wall to shake off the excesses. Start working from the top and paint downwards. After every coat, correct any defect like fibers from the roller cover and drips.

Painting ceiling

For smooth, non-textured ceilings, spraying a primer followed by two coats of flat ceiling paint is enough to give it a fantastic look.  Painted or textured ceilings, may not require any modification except for cut in on the surrounding walls.

While painting, take care of other accessories that may need to be installed in the house. For instance, the area for kitchen cupboard installation should be primed, and the two coats of color applied before other sections. Again, around such accessories, instead of cut-ins, only a few touch-ups can give good results.  You may not need to repaint the doors if the garage paint has no blemish. To obtain perfect edges, apply masking tape and remove it after the color is dry. Another precaution you need to take is checking for any wall defects and sealing them before priming. If they are too big, you can recall the drywallers before beginning painting.

A fantastic design combined with a beautiful finish increases the worth of any new construction. Involving in a professional in painting your home interior is, therefore, essential for every homeowner. The process mainly consists in painting the walls and the ceilings.
